Eastbourne Memorial and Peace Garden: Honoring the Civilian Victims of World War II
The Wish Tower Memorial and Peace Garden pays tribute to the 174 civilians who tragically lost their lives during World War II in Eastbourne, UK. Situated within the historic dry moat of The Wish Tower, a Grade II Listed Scheduled Ancient Monument on Eastbourne’s grassy seafront slope, the garden serves as a serene space for reflection and remembrance.
The project features an 8-tonne granite boulder memorial, with a commemorative plaque inscribed with the names of the fallen. The boulder symbolizes the weight of history and the importance of remembrance. Surrounding the memorial, the Peace Garden harmoniously integrates nature and contemplation, inviting visitors to honour the past while finding solace amidst planting and tranquil pathways.
Emphasising the significance of heritage, this project highlights the connection between nature, history, and the enduring spirit of community resilience. The design encourages reflection, remembrance, and peace, making it a vital addition to Eastbourne’s seafront.
